The Ranch for Boys serves 50 boys ages 13 to 18 at our residential boarding school located on 30 acres surrounded by working ranches and orchards. During our program, we focus on character, integrity, hard work, and respect. We cultivate an atmosphere of positive peer pressure. We give boys responsibility for work projects and chapel services on campus to keep them engaged in what is their home away from home. We desire to see young men mature in their faith in Christ, and we provide worship, chapel services, bible studies, discipleship, retreats and mission trip opportunities to support that growth. Residents also stretch and support each other in their faith. Would any of that happen in a military school or boot camp? That’s unlikely.
A Better Option than Military Schools and Boot Camps for Boys from Alexandria, VA
In our program, boys remain physically and mentally active and challenged throughout their stay. Our recreational and sports facilities include a well-equipped gym and a professional array of weight machines, soccer field, baseball diamond, basketball court, pool, game room, fishing ponds, and horses. We often go fishing on the Florida waterways and out in the ocean. The highlight of the program is an incredible wilderness experience in the mountains of North Carolina during the last month of the boys’ time at the ranch. Whitewater rafting, hiking on the Appalachian Trail, camping, and other adventures demonstrate that life can be at the same time adventuresome and positive.
While we offer individual, group, and family counseling in traditional settings, we find that most life-changing conversations tend to take place during outdoor activities and during ordinary situations. Counseling takes place frequently during the day, in all settings, through conversations with mentors during work or activities. We put great importance on mentorship, providing the boys with positive male role models during their residence with us.
Our on-campus academy is in session year-round to give students the chance to take care of missed credits. We have on-campus teachers who facilitate the boy’s education and tutor individual boys. Boys from Alexandria, Virginia quickly catch up on missed coursework or work ahead.
It is our conviction that the most important change is a heart change — believing that Jesus Christ has a purpose and a plan for each individual’s life. Alexandria is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of 2010, the city had a total population of 139,966. Located along the Western bank of the Potomac River, Alexandria is approximately six miles south of downtown Washington, D.C.
Like the rest of northern Virginia, as well as central Maryland, modern Alexandria has been shaped by its proximity to the nation’s capital. It is largely populated by professionals working in the federal civil service, the U.S. military, or for one of the many private companies which contract to provide services to the federal government. The latter are known locally as beltway bandits, after the Capital Beltway, an interstate highway that circles Washington, D.C. One of Alexandria’s largest employers is the U.S. Department of Defense. Others include the Institute for Defense Analyses and the Center for Naval Analyses. In 2005, the United States Patent and Trademark Office moved 7,100 employees from 18 separate buildings in nearby Crystal City into a new headquarters complex in the city.
The historic center of Alexandria is known as Old Town. With its concentration of boutiques, restaurants, antique shops and theaters, it is a major draw for tourists. Like Old Town, many Alexandria neighborhoods are compact, walkable, high-income suburbs of Washington D.C. It is the seventh largest and highest income independent city in Virginia.
